What makes you special and unique?
I think the things that make me most unique are my passion for dance and my love for children. I feel that sharing my passion for dance with children who are less fortunate expresses my caring personality.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
The best advice I have ever received is a quote my mother always reminds me of, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself instead of a second-rate version of someone else." -Judy Garland. This piece of advice helps me remember to always be my true self and not to conform to what others think I should be.

Name one thing you cannot live without.
The one thing I cannot absolutely positively live without is my cell phone! This is how I stay in touch with friends and family. If I ever lost my phone, it would be as if I were cut off from the world.

What's the most valuable lesson you've ever learned?
The most valuable lesson I have ever learned is to never give up. When the Lord closes one door, he opens another. I auditioned for the Pacific Northwest Ballet Summer Intensive and even though I was not accepted, I still kept auditioning for other ballet programs and was accepted into the Washington Ballet Summer Intensive.

Who is your most valued role model and why?
My most valued role model is Princess Diana. To me she symbolized everything a princess should be. She was a caring, kind, and compassionate person whose humanitarian efforts improved the lives of many children in third world countries.

What was your most unexpected moment?
My most unexpected moment was when I was crowned Miss West Central Mississippi Outstanding Teen because this was the first pageant that I took part in and I really did not expect to win.

What is your workout routine?
I really do not have a workout "routine". I have dance team practice everyday after school for two hours, from there I go to ballet class for two hours and then rehearsals for an upcoming performance. On the weekends, when I am not rehearsing, I try to go to the gym and work on toning my arms.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
Recently, I have been blessed with many accomplisments. My most recent accomplishments are being selected as a VIP Kid for the "Mississippi Parent" magazine and being asked to be the Layout Editor of our school newspaper.

What is the best compliment you have ever received?
One of the best compliments I have ever received was when my dance teacher told me that I was a true dancer because when I dance, I do not just move through the movements, but that I dance each step with all of my heart.

What is your secret wish?
My secret wish is to be a famous singer. I love to dance and sing to my favorite songs in front of my bedroom mirror and pretend that I am on stage in front of a huge crowd.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
My most embarrassing moment was when I was at one of my brother's soccer tournaments with my family; I noticed that there were small planes flying near the soccer complex. I asked my dad if the planes were "real" and he said yes. Then I proceeded to ask him how they fit people in that small of a plane. After he and everyone else around us finished laughing, he explained to me that they were real planes, but that they were radio controlled airplanes.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
My biggest guilty pleasure is Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino in the biggest size they come! I have to have at least one a week.

What is your favorite movie and why?
My favorite movie is "Step Up" because it really shows that you have to work hard for the things that you really want in life. It also shows that dancing is not as easy as it looks.

What do you like to do for fun... relaxation... recreation?
My most favorite thing to do is to have "girls’ night" with my best friend Megan. We watch chick flicks and eat junk food into the wee hours of the morning! I also like to shop, talk on the phone, text, go to the beach, dance, swim, go on road trips, singing really loud in the shower and in the car, and making new friends.

What would be your dream vacation or destination?
My dream destination would be Fiji. I love the beach, the sun, and the feel of the sand between my toes!

Who am I?
My name is Shelby Corn, and I attend Northwest Rankin High School. In my spare time, I love to cheer on the Cougars at high school football games. I also love to spend time with my family and my best friend Megan. In addition, I love shopping, making people laugh, meeting new people, being surprised, eating sushi, talking and texting on the phone, taking vacations, having birthdays, singing in the shower, and last but certainly not least, DANCING! I am a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church where I participate in Youth activities. In January, I was crowned Miss West Central Outstanding Teen 2007.

Recently, my father and my close neighbor were diagnosed with cancer. Their battle with cancer has motivated me to pursue a career as a geneticist. In becoming a geneticist, I hope to find cures for cancer for future patients.

Tell us about your platform.
My platform is Dance Education for Underprivileged Children and Youth. I have been dancing for twelve years. During this time, I have learned many skills other than just dance. Discipline, responsibility, and time management have been instilled into all aspects of my life. I have come to realize the type of person that I would like to be because I have been exposed to many types of dance educators.

I feel that since God has blessed me with the gift of dance, that I should share this gift with others. I have had many wonderful opportunities to train under numerous outstanding professionals through dancing, and I believe that I should give back to those who are not as fortunate and will not have the same opportunities that I have had. By providing dance education to the underprivileged children and youth throughout our state, I hope to share and kindle a passion for dance within them. In addition to developing a passion for dance, I hope that the skills learned through dance will transcend into other areas of their lives.
