What makes you special and unique?
One of the things that make me special and unique is that I am representing Flowood as their FIRST Flowood's Outstanding Teen. Since the day I was crowned, I have felt so honored to be a part of the wonderful Flowood community. They have given me so much support during my reign as Flowood’s Outstanding Teen.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
I have always been taught to “NEVER GIVE UP!” Everyday people fall short of their goals and give up because of the disheartening words of others. I believe that if you have a goal that you want to reach, you must persevere when obstacles come your way and never give up! After all, you only have one life to live.

Name one thing you cannot live without.
There are actually two things that I cannot live without, my bible and my family and friends. I can always find comfort and direction from reading scripture in my bible and also encouraging words from my family and friends.

What's the most valuable lesson you've ever learned?
"When one door closes, another door opens"

This has been my life motto since I was ten years old. I can remember auditioning for my first play, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," which truly developed my passion for theater. As I auditioned for plays and musicals over the years, I was not always given a part or sometimes given a different role. Although I was disappointed, I quickly learned and that there were plenty of roles out there just around the corner. Not only do I relate to this motto to theater, but also to everyday life. That is why I call this my life motto because it gets me through the days that are not so good, and reminds me that there is always another opportunity for me.

Who is your most valued role model and why?
My most valued role model would be the singer and actress - Julie Andrews. As a child, I remember watching her as Mary Poppins. I would pretend to be her while singing Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. As I got older, I developed a respect for Julie Andrews, not only because she was a performer, but also because of her class, style and elegance. Two of my favorite quotes from her are, "Be yourself and let yourself be seen," and "Sometimes opportunities float right past your nose. Work hard, apply yourself, and be ready. When an opportunity comes - you can grab it."

What was your most unexpected moment?
My most unexpected moment was when I was cast as Eulalie Mackechnie Shinn in "The Music Man, Jr." at New Stage Theatre. I was so thrilled when I found out I was chosen to play this part because it was different from any other role I had played. I enjoyed giving the audience a few good laughs with her wacky and attention-starved personality.

What is your workout routine?
My workout routine consists of cardiovascular exercise for at least thirty minutes a day, lifting weights three times a week, and attending two aerobics classes at the Flowood YMCA. I also take classes for four hours a week at Xpress Dance Company and have rehearsals for two hours or more at Actor’s Playhouse. Lastly, I practice my dance routine for talent competition, as well as the dance routines for the pageant.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
I have to say there are two accomplishments that mean a lot to me. One was being elected 2006-2007 Class Co-President. Our biggest project was building our class homecoming float while also serving as class homecoming maid. Right after I was elected, my officers and I had a huge task of raising money in less than two weeks for our float decorations. It was a fun, but demanding at times being in two different roles; however, I kept finding myself thriving well under pressure even though it drove my parents crazy!

The next accomplishment would be winning Flowood Outstanding Teen on my third try. During those two months of trying to win a preliminary, my mom had gotten sick. It was tough because she had always been there for me until then. I learned a lot during that time to keep trying no matter what and it made winning that much more special and sweeter!

What is the best compliment you have ever received?
The best compliment that I have received was from Uncle Scott, Aunt Brec, Uncle Ben and Aunt Jen. They are always telling me, "Megan, we hope that our children grow up to be just like you!"

What is your secret wish?
My secret wish is to be one of the interior designers on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. I have always been touched by this show and believe it serves such a worthy cause. The Extreme Makeover team is so passionate and devoted to improving other people’s lives. My favorite part of the show is at the end, when you see the smiles on the family’s faces, it is then, when you know that the Extreme Makeover team truly is making a difference in the lives of others.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
The most embarrassing moment was when I slept in tiny sponge rollers the night before school. When I woke up, I noticed that my hair had ringlets and was about six inches shorter. I went to show my mother who was still sleeping at the time (and of course she did have her contacts on). I leaned over her and said, “MAMA, what I am going to with my hair?” I nearly scared her half to death. Let’s just say, I got a lot of stares that day at school.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
My biggest guilty pleasure would be ordering a Power Punch Smoothie from Smoothie King. I usually buy a smoothie after I work out or just to give me a boost after a long day. This smoothie has fresh strawberries, bananas, and a special carbohydrate mix that tastes cool and refreshing!

What is your favorite movie and why?
My favorite movie is the comedy-romance, "13 Going on 30." I received this movie as a gift for my thirteenth birthday. I enjoyed watching it with my mom because we could both relate to it since I had just turned thirteen and she had grown up in the 80’s. The best part of the movie was the great 80’s music - especially the song, Thriller.

What do you like to do for fun... relaxation... recreation?
For fun, I love going with my friends and family to Ole Miss and Northwest Rankin football and baseball games. When I get the chance I also like to support the University of Southern Mississippi football program since my grandfather, Daddy Don, played for the Eagles. I also enjoy going with my mother and grandmother, JoJo, to arts and craft shows especially Mistletoe Market and Canton Flea Market.

For relaxation, I like listening to Jack Johnson on my iPod while getting a manicure and pedicure.

For recreation, I use to love swimming at the YMCA and Sunkist Swim Team for seven years until a few years ago. It was then I realized that I needed to concentrate more on my dance technique and private vocal lessons. I also find shopping very recreational for me because people say that I am hard to keep up with!

What would be your dream vacation or destination?
My dream vacation would be traveling to New York City to go shopping and to see as many Broadway musicals as I can.

What do you like best about the state of Mississippi?
The best thing I like about Mississippi is our true Southern hospitality as well as the delicious home-cooked meals our grandmother’s prepare for us especially my Mimi’s.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?
In ten years, I would love to be an actress in television or film; however, I do see myself as a graduate of a major university preferably The University of Mississippi with a Pharmacy degree.

Who am I?
Friends and family have always told me that I am a passionate, dedicated and a goal-oriented person. I always try to put forth all my effort in everything I do! I enjoy spending time with my wonderful family who are always there for me. They have instilled in me strong morals and values and to stand firm in my faith regardless of whatever situation I am in. My parents have always encouraged me to keep my grades up and to be involved in school activities. I can hear them saying, “One day all your hard work with pay off.” My best friend is my mother. She is my rock and helped shape the person I am today. As for my friends, they are the most awesome friends anyone could ever have. Recently, I have become fascinated with my ancestor’s past since both of my grandfathers have been researching our family history. It is so amazing to hear stories from their past and to see old photographs.

During my free time, when I have it, I enjoy the privilege of spending time on Facebook. I have to honestly say that it is monitored by my parents. My favorite things that I like to eat are candy skittles and chicken crunch casserole. Many people may not know this about me, but I enjoy cooking. Although, I am not the greatest cook, I love watching The Food Channel to give me some pointers. A new love for me is vintage-style clothing because of its elegance and style. It is not only fashionable, but it is perfect to wear to almost any occasion.

My favorite hobbies include acting, dancing and singing. You can usually see me performing around the cities of Flowood, Brandon, Pearl and other surrounding communities. One of the most memorable show choir performances was entertaining all the guests aboard the Carnival Cruise Ship this past summer. We had such a blast performing, snorkeling and being on the beautiful beaches of Cozumel. Then this past spring break, I had the privilege of going on a Pinelake mission trip with my youth Choir called Chi Alpha. We performed touring around the city of San Antonio, Texas at churches and prisons. It was truly an uplifting experience and at times a sadden one to hear other people's stories. It certainly made me appreciate all my blessings even more. My next performance goal will be in May where I will audition for the newly "Applause and Encore Drama Troupe" at Actor’s Playhouse. If selected for the troupe, I hope to be chosen to attend an acting pilot season in Los Angeles, California where I would be there for two months beginning January of 2008.

Tell us about your platform.
My platform that I am passionate about is a program called Child Lures Prevention. The program is an empowering, non-threatening approach that is actively embraced by psychologists, educators, students and parents alike in over 2000 school systems in the United States. This research-based Child Lures Prevention School Program teaches children important vital life skills to keep them safe.

When I teach this program to mostly elementary students they learn:

  • Valuable life skills to help them recognize and avoid people, decisions and situations that threaten their own personal safety.
  • To recognize, follow and trust their instincts about situations and people
  • The personal boundaries that no one, not even a relative, should ever cross
  • Confidence in resisting those who attempt to lure them into unhealthy behavior or dangerous situations
  • How to report attempted abuse or abuse to trusted adult
  • The importance of telling someone about the incidents
  • Their role and responsibility in helping to make sure their school is violence-free and safe.
  • Also, I reassure the students that most people are kind, safe and committed to their well-being; however, I have found the overall misconception is that students have been taught that all “bad people or strangers” are the ones that look scary looking. This is NOT always true! A stranger or abductor can be nice, not so nice, look scary or not look scary --which means it can be ANYONE! The old saying “Don’t Talk to Strangers” is not effective as it use to be. This course teaches students “specific lures” used by predators and to also again follow their own “instincts” about people and situations. Each time I speak, I break in down to their own age level where they can easily understand it, but more importantly to make it fun for them. The students really take an active part in role-playing and answering questions as well as them asking me questions.

With so many missing children today, we cannot simply ignore this issue any longer. It is up to ALL of us to do a better job of keeping ALL children safe. When we are suspicious of someone and their actions, we need to use our own instincts and act on it before it is too late! Another way is to put Child Lures Prevention Program in all schools and child care centers.
