What makes you special and unique?
What makes me unique is my family. My father is a wildlife specialist in Colorado. Every summer when I go to visit, My Dad and I trap wild animals that cause nuisances in residential and commercial properties, and we relocate them into the mountains. These animals range from bats to coyotes. I have a lot of fun being so close to animals that many people have never seen in person before. I have nurtured one week old raccoons and have even taken care of baby beavers.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
My best advice I have received was from my grandmother. She tells me to "kill them with kindness". When I was younger, I would come home crying because my friends would pick on me. It wasn't my nature to intentionally be mean to someone so my grandmother would tell me to just smile and ignore their comments. They finally realized that it didn't bother me and stopped the teasing.

Name one thing you cannot live without.
I could never live without my camera. I love taking pictures of my friends and family. Taking pictures helps me to remember all of my great memories with them.

What's the most valuable lesson you've ever learned?
My most valuable lesson I have ever learned is to always be yourself. No one should ever try to change the way you are. God made us unique for a reason!

Who is your most valued role model and why?
My grandmother is my most valued role model. She is an all around great person and a wonderful cook. She was valedictorian of her school, and I have always looked to her for advice.

What was your most unexpected moment?
My most unexpected moment would have to be when I had my first wreck. It was already raining outside and my friends and I decided to go to the bowling alley. I was driving down the road and took a slight turn. My car then spun out of control and hit a truck. Luckily no one was hurt, but that is just how easy it is for accidents to occur.

What is your workout routine?
I run every Tuesday and Thursday at the gym after my ballet practices. I workout my core and legs everyday by sit-ups and lunges. Dancing is also a great cardio workout that enjoy everyday.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
My biggest accomplishment has to be when I was elected to join the National Honor Society. I worked strenuously on my school grades and leadership in my class and community. My hard work paid off when I was elected at the beginning of my Junior year.

What is the best compliment you have ever received?
When I was working as a car-hop at Sonic Drive-thru, I was told that I had made someones day just by smiling at them, and I received a huge tip in return.

What is your secret wish?
I secretly wish that I could sing better. I know it is very dreadful to my siblings and friends when I sing at the top of my lungs while riding in the car. I love to sing and wish my voice was not as bad as what people tell me.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
My most embarrassing moment was when I was in the eighth grade. The bell had just rang for lunch and I was walking through rows of desks to exit the room. I tripped on one of the legs of a chair and went flying through the air. I hit the teachers desk and knocked down his filing cabinet and almost every paper on his desk. After all of the chaos, I stood up off of the floor to a laughing class of students.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
Dark chocolate would have to be my biggest guilty pleasure. No matter how full I am, I can always indulge one more bite of dark chocolate.

What is your favorite movie and why?
My all-time favorite movie is Beauty and the Beast. In the beginning, Belle views him as nothing more than a monster, but as she spends time with him she realizes to look deeper than his outside appearance. I love this story line, and I use it in every day in life. Never judge a book by its cover!

What do you like to do for fun... relaxation... recreation?
For fun, I like to dance, take pictures of wildlife, and listen to music. When I am ready to relax, I like to pop in a good movie or read a book. I enjoy riding my horses, fishing, and taking my dogs for walks.

What would be your dream vacation or destination?
My dream vacation would be to the Bahamas. I would love to relax on the white sand beaches and watch the emerald and turquoise tides roll with the breeze in my hair. I would like to go scuba diving and enjoy the rich culture of the Bahamians.

What do you like best about the state of Mississippi?
Well living in Mississippi during the school year and Colorado during the summer, I can tell many good things about the state of Mississippi. It has a feeling of 'home' unlike any other state. The weather is never too cold, and the cooking is always good. I live on the Mississippi River, and the scenery is amazing. There are so many good qualities about Mississippi!

Who am I?
My name is Erica Lauren McDaniel. I was born in Natchez, Mississippi on October 25, 1989. I am the daughter of David McDaniel and Tammy Wroten. My mother and father divorced when I was two years old, but I have been blessed with an awesome step mom and step dad. I am one of five siblings whom I love dearly. I take them kite flying and play games with them every chance I can. I like to spend time with my grandparents and camping with them in their RV. I love to play dominoes with my grandparent's friends, they are so full of life! I really like my grandmother's cooking. At a very early age, she has taught me how to cook, and we have spent so much time in the kitchen. I would have to say, I love her spaghetti dish the best!

I have attended Adams County Christian School since Kindergarten. My school has a basis on Christian beliefs, and it is great praying with everyone and hearing God's word in the morning before school. Because my school is small, best friends are easy to find. My favorite school subjects are Biology and History. I have just completed my third year of Biology with my favorite teacher and awesome friend, Mrs. Freeman. She has helped me so much through school and her studies are going to help me in the medical field which I wish to pursue in the future. I am competing in this pageant to make friends, do the very best of my ability, and hopefully become a bigger role model than I am today.

Tell us about your platform.
I have chosen to improve the lives of people living with paralysis through the Quality of Life Grants as my platform. My uncle became a quadriplegic due to military preparation for Desert Storm. His injury not only affected his life, but mine. I learned at an early age that love and kindness comes from within and to never judge a book by its cover. The Quality of Life Grants established by the Christopher Reeve Foundation are given to thirteen programs twice yearly to enhance the lives of paralyzed victims. These programs range from wheelchair accessible tree houses for children to independent living for adults. I have contributed to my platform by collecting donations from local businesses and passing out brochures containing information on how to help the paralytic. I know how paralysis affects someone and their family, and I wish to improve the lives of those people through the Quality of Life Grants.
