Getting to know

Miss Historic Crossroads

Melissa King

What are your hobbies?
My hobbies include playing board games with my friends, scrap booking, shopping on Ebay, watching movies of all sorts, and learning to drive on the snow in Michigan.

What makes you special and unique?
Education has always been an important part of who I am. I attended the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science and as a 15 year old 3 hours away from the comforts of home, taking this chance to better myself has helped make me special and unique. Not many students are allotted the opportunity to attend the prestigious high school, but as a graduate I feel it has given me the ability to realize my potential.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
The best advice I ever received was from a second term law student. He told me, "Don’t panic. It’s hard; just don’t let it get the best of you." Law school had always been a dream of mine, but I have to admit I was so nervous on the first day I was doing everything I could not to shake in my shoes. The horror stories of professors kicking students out of class, asking questions which no one could possibly know the answer to, and of course all this taking place in front of your peers. Luckily though, I kept those words close and when I was called on to stand up and present a case to my professor and class on the first day, I survived.

Name one thing you cannot live without.
I’ve always been one for keeping appointments in order, being very responsive to emails, returning calls, and just being organized in general. I recently upgraded my cell phone to a BlackBerry and that little guy keeps me in line, planned, and ready to go all the time. It’s crazy but I really love getting notices when I have emails. There is no way I could live without my little wonder phone.

What is the most valuable lesson you ever learned?
My mother always says things happen for a reason and just because something doesn’t go the way you wanted it that doesn’t mean there isn’t a silver lining. Many times in life I haven’t come out on top but I know there is a reason for the outcome. There is always something bigger and brighter just around the corner.

Who is your most valued role model and why?
Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Conner has always been a role model to me. As America’s first female Supreme Court Justice she has been a constant source of inspiration. I always enjoy reading court cases she has written.

What was your most unexpected moment?
My most unexpected moment was being selected as the Executive Director of the Ole Miss Ambassadors program. I have a great deal of respect for the University of Mississippi and being given the opportunity to positively promote and educate potential students to the great benefits of attending such a "great American public university" was a truly unexpected blessing.

What is your workout routine?
I currently use an intensive cardiovascular workout with weight training and strength training.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
Without a doubt, finishing my first semester of law school has been my biggest accomplishment to date. It was such a rewarding experience that I gained so much from. Soon I hope to say that graduating from law school is my biggest accomplishment and then passing the bar.

What is the best compliment you have ever received?
The best compliment I ever received was that my smile actually brightened someone’s day. I always thought it was just something people said, but when a close friend of mine serving in Iraq told me that getting to see me smile made his day I knew it was much more than a saying. I always try to smile now because I never know if it could brighten someone’s day.

What is your secret wish?
My secret wish is to travel to Fairmount, Indiana for the James Dean Festival. James Dean is my favorite actor and I’ve always wanted to experience the event (which marks the anniversary of his death) in person. I’ve been to the museum before but I think it would be remarkable to be there with thousands of fans from all over the world gathered to celebrate the life and memory of Hollywood’s rebel.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
Super Bowl Sunday one of my friends had some people over to watch the big game and Buffalo wings were the main ingredient of his smorgasbord of football treats. I decided to sample a few. Sadly, I didn’t realize that some of the "Atomic" wings were mixed in with the regular ones. My mouth instantly caught fire and I spent the next half hour trying to cool it down. I probably drank a gallon of water afterwards. Needless to say, my friends all picked on me for the rest of the night. I’m sure my face (and mouth) were red all night.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
My biggest guilty pleasure has to be horror movies. I’ll watch any scary movie. Sometimes they’re good for a jump or two but mostly it’s the belly laughs that keep me coming back for more. In fact, I've even though about writing a horror movie screenplay with one of my friends. Recently, I've even started reading Stephen King books to keep my horror fix.

What is your favorite movie and why?
"Giant" is my favorite movie. I am a huge fan of the late James Dean and in this film you get to see just how he might have progressed physically if he had not been killed in a tragic accident. Even though it was released in 1956, "Giant" is an epic film about love and relationships. Every time I watch I pick up on something new.

What is your favorite color and why?
My favorite color is aquamarine. Not only is it my birthstone, but I love the coloring. It always reminds me of the ocean and sunny beaches. Plus, it’s a great color for clothes and of course jewelry.

What do you like to do for fun... relaxation... recreation?
These days relaxation for me is a day at the spa. Massages, manicures, pedicures, and all the pampering that come along with it. I also love window shopping, spending time with my friends and family, and just enjoying life.

What would be your dream vacation or destination?
My dream vacation would be to road trip across America. I think it would be truly interesting to experience every state’s little quirks and road side attractions not to mention some of the bigger cities like New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Miami just to name a few. Just hit the road in a convertible (and a plane ride for my Hawaii visit) and check out all that America has to offer.

What do you like best about your hometown?
Living 14 hours away from home makes me appreciate coming back to my hometown more than I ever thought it would. The familiar faces and places are always a welcome sight when I return from school. The entire atmosphere is so friendly and comforting. I also really miss the magnolias too so those always bring a smile to my face. Dorothy was right, "There’s no place like home".

What do you like best about the state of Mississippi, besides our food & hospitality?
Without a doubt I don’t just like, I love the people of Mississippi. Mississippians have always been a hospitable, caring, amazing group of people. We have a rich history and a bright future ahead of us. To me, there is no better place than Mississippi and I am proud to call it home.

What's in your CD player or on your iPod right now?
Recently I’ve been big on soundtracks. I love the movie musical version of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street". It’s such an astounding movie and who know Johnny Depp could sing? I also have the soundtrack from "Into the Wild" and "The Departed". And you can always find Tom Petty rocking out in my iPod!

Where do you see yourself in ten years?
In ten years, I’d like to be in Mississippi using both my undergraduate business degree and my law degree working as a successful Mississippi corporate attorney. And of course, letting God’s master plan play out for me.

Who am I?
I consider myself to be a very passionate, hard-working, dedicated young woman. I love throwing my entire spirit into any project, big or small, to make sure the job always gets done. I love setting goals and working to accomplish them. Leadership roles don’t scare me; they give me the motivation to be the inspiration for others. Those three qualities help me distinguish myself from the crowd and really get to the core of who I am.

But don’t let that fool you; I’m also one of the most fun loving girls you’ll ever meet. I love hearing a good joke (even though I can never think of them later) and tuning in to watch my favorite comedy shows. I promise you, I could watch the American version of "The Office" and "The Golden Girls" over and over again and never get tired of it. I’m also a huge fan of "Matlock", so much so I want to get a Powder-puff Chinese Crested puppy and name him after the lawyer sleuth.

I’m also a big proponent of living life to the fullest. I think of myself as an explorer always wanting to expand my body of knowledge and fill my days with positive energy. Trying new foods, having an issue based discussion with a peer, or simply trying to make a difference in my day or someone else’s are things that keep me living life to the fullest.

Tell us about your occupational experience.
For most of my life I’ve been a hard-working student using my education to prepare me for my future career. However, a few jobs I’ve taken on come to mind. First as a student at the University of Mississippi, I took a position with the Office of Student Disabilities as a classroom note taker. While attending classes I would take diligent notes which would then be used for other students in my class who had a disability which might have kept them from taking the best notes possible. It was such a joy to me knowing that I could help benefit a fellow classmate dealing with the struggles of their disability while working toward their college degree as well. Recently, I took on task of starting my own non-profit organization (check out my platform issue below for more information). I had never dreamed of being the founder of anything, but working hard to accomplish incorporation has my organization well on the way to becoming a beneficial addition to not only the state of Mississippi but also America.

Tell us about your platform.
My platform issue is entitled "In Support of Soldiers". This is a non-profit organization I began to benefit members of America’s Armed Forces stationed overseas. In the Army alone, over 300,000 servicemen and servicewomen are deployed in 120 countries worldwide. Many of them are without families and for some there is no one waiting back in the United States. And even for those with families waiting at home, it's still uplifting to know that other Americans care about them. "In Support of Soldiers" is designed to send care packages to as many soldiers overseas as possible. Care packages include things American’s tend to take for granted: pens, paper, phone cards, lip balm, hard candies, chocolate, and even foot powder. All of these items and many more are incredibly valued to soldiers and can sometimes be in short supply. When a soldier receives one of these packages, even if just for a moment, they are reminded of home and the simple pleasures combat does not allow. And as the proverb goes, "You can’t buy sunscreen in the desert."
