Reading, shopping, traveling, surfing the internet, painting, drawing, DJing, attending my brothers football games at Oxford High School, watching my Uncle Tony coach the Ole Miss rebels and spending time with my new puppy, Prada Back to Top What makes you special and unique? Everything about me (the good, the great, and the not so great) makes me unique. My struggles, my triumphs, my talents, and my experiences make me the individual I have become. My non-traditional upbringing makes me unique. Being a child of God and being blessed with the gift of intuition makes me special Back to Top What is the best advice you have ever received? Being courageous doesn't mean the absence of fear. It means following your dreams in spite of. It's always being a first rate you instead of a second rate version of someone else. So be courageous Back to Top Name one thing you cannot live without. The support of my loving friends and family so many people have so much yet no one to share it with. Family and friends are like life support. Back to Top What's the most valuable lesson you've ever learned? To appreciate everything, even the things we take for granted. Running water, electricity, paved roads, and shoes on our feet should all be considered luxuries. Back to Top Who is your most valued role model and why? My Aunt Vikki, as a mother, a wife, and an assistant principal she exemplifies what it means to be a modern woman; respecting the duties of womanhood yet honoring the value of education, professionalism, and taking pride in who you are. Back to Top What was your most unexpected moment? My most unexpected moment was winning the preliminary talent competition on the local level. I knew I was competing against great traditional talents and I didn't know how well it would come across; but I was passionate about the piece (Langston Hughes "Let America Be America Again") and dedicated to the art of oratory. I brought home the preliminary talent award and the title of Miss Tougaloo Back to Top What is your workout routine? 1 hr cardio and strengthening 4 times a week alternately Back to Top What has been your biggest accomplishment to date? Completing a grueling 7 week sanitation engineering project in Nkubu, Kenya for orphaned children Back to Top What is the best compliment you have ever recieved? I was giving advice to one of my mentees about staying focused and being determined and when she had finished processing the information she looked at me and said "Jazz, You're so philosophical!" I felt like Socrates. Back to Top What is your secret wish? To completely end global poverty Back to Top What was your most embarrassing moment? Rushing in the bathroom I once tucked the back of my skirt in my panty hose by mistake and walked back to my Sunday school class. My classmate pointed and said "Is that how its suppose to be?" Back to Top What is your biggest guilty pleasure? Spending too much at the mall Back to Top What is your favorite movie and why? The Green Mile, it is a story of humility and of heart. A grand film of divine power, compassion, and the ability to heal. I also like Mississippi Masala because it was filmed in Greenwood and my Uncle has a cameo. Back to Top What do you like to do for fun... relaxation... recreation? Go to the spa, dinner, travel, shop, try new recipes, read fashion magazines, and visit my family in the Mississippi Delta. Back to Top What would be your dream vacation or destination? I would love to return to Kenya and go on a Maasai Mara safari, visit Mombasa Beach, and see the millions of magnificent flamingoes in Nakuru. Back to Top What do you like best about the state of Mississippi? Mississippi produces the best and the brightest entertainers, athletes, prize winning authors, and international business men and women. The food and hospitality makes me glad to call it home. It is home to so many and so much. Back to Top Where do you see yourself in ten years? In ten years, having obtained a Master of Fine Arts I hope to be acting, directing, and traveling the world. I would like to be serving my country diplomatically as an ambassador and as a motivational speaker sharing my experiences of educational opportunities, extensive travel, and humanitarianism. Back to Top Who am I? Where do I begin? Currently I am a 20-year old Junior Humanities major at Tougaloo College, a prestigious historic liberal arts institution located in North Jackson. My academic emphasis is Mass Communication and my interest is theatre. The interrelation of the arts has drawn me to the Humanities field. Between working part time as an on air personality at Jackson’s WJMI 99.7, maintaining my 3.4 G.P.A, working as a full time humanitarian, helping my grandparents operate our family business, and preparing to be your Miss Mississippi 2007 I enjoy traveling and spending time with my family. I am the eldest and only girl of three. My brother Jamison will graduate from Oxford High School in May and has committed to the Ole Miss Rebels football team for the fall. My youngest brother stars as quarter back for Oxford Jr. High. My families’ encouragement of excellence and exploration inspired my pilgrimage to Kenya last summer as a volunteer and ambassador for Mississippi. Completing an international community development project and having the opportunity to network globally has been my greatest accomplishment thus far.
I am a proud graduate of the Piney Woods School, a historic international boarding school here in Mississippi. The multi-cultural environment at PWS fostered my international interest and helped me to develop a tolerance, understanding, and respect for different cultures. As a graduate I am lifetime advocate for the education of “the head, the heart, and the hands”. Ambition and drive are two of my most powerful assets and I am focused on representing my state and country both profoundly and directly. I respect and honor the responsibilities of Miss Mississippi and my duty as an American citizen. I believe that “To whom much is given; much is expected” Luke 12:48
Tell us about your platform.
I have personally seen the ravishing effects of AIDS and global poverty. Our society does not go unaffected by these global statistics. GASH is a multi-dynamic platform that fosters educational astuteness, moral responsibility, and civic engagement all with global perceptiveness. This program is designed to increase awareness and humanitarianism towards issues as global poverty, famine, homelessness locally and abroad, and international health issues.
I would use my Miss Mississippi title to travel our state giving motivational speeches concerning educational advancement, volunteerism, and global giving. It is ludicrous to believe that one person alone can end global poverty but it is not impossible, with collaborative efforts, to make a sufficient impact.
