What makes you special and unique?
I feel very special for the fact that I was born into a large and affectionate family whose main concern is for the well-being of others and each other. My mom is one of eight, my dad is one of six, and I am one of four. I am never alone, and I always have someone by my side to encourage and reassure me when things get a bit rough. We all have a unique bond that is apparent to all our peers, co-workers, and acquaintances and even though it may get kind of crazy at times, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
The best advice I have ever received is something we have all heard, yet not many follow. I know I fall short quite often. My dad stresses to me to live each day as if it were my last... This doesn’t mean you must do everything you haven’t done, or eat everything in sight, or anything in that manner!!! It just means to come to a state of peace within yourself, be kind and helpful to others, and appreciate your blessings. I believe that if we all truly maintained this state of mind, we would all live happier, fuller, and more meaningful lives.

Name one thing you cannot live without.
My planner!!! HAHA. I live my entire life by what I write down in my little pink planner. I don't know what I am suppose to do for the day until I check my notes. It is the only thing that keeps me organized with all my activities and obligations. I write down EVERYTHING!!! It may sound a bit extreme, however, it really does help me to prioritize, and it's the only way to accomplish my daily goals.

What's the most valuable lesson you've ever learned?
I have learned that no matter how many commitments I have agreed to, the most important thing is my health. Last summer I reached the point of complete exhaustion. Yet I still would go to the gym for two hours, dance for three hours, and play an hour and a half of tennis after pulling an all-nighter completing my assignments. I had drained my body of all its nutrients and had decreased the quality of my immune system. When the doctor told me I wasn't allowed to engage in any type of physical activity for six weeks, I immediately regretted never allowing myself to take a twenty minute nap or to spend a night at home relaxing. I now listen to my body when it tells me that I have pushed it too far.

Who is your most valued role model and why?
To name someone whom I adore and who has inspired me to pursue anything my heart desires, my parents are the number one. They REALLY have supported me throughout my entire life no matter what the case. They have instilled within me the drive and determination to follow my passions and have always shown me that dreams are the foundation for success.

What was your most unexpected moment?
My most unexpected moment is the instant my family and I heard that our home had been swept away by Hurricane Katrina. Not for the reason that our house was gone, but I was astonished at the fact that I wasn’t heart broken as one would anticipate. I was so surprised to find myself perfectly okay, as well as the rest of my family. Without words, we all realized that we were together and that was all that mattered. We were alive and well and no one could take away our memories or our love for each other.

What is your workout routine?
Wow! Which one!?!? HAHA. It is different every day. The key to working out is diversity. You need to surprise your muscles and give them a little something new every now and then so they don’t adapt to specific movements. I cardio for at least an hour five to seven days a week. This will consist of either the elliptical, treadmill, dancing, or just taking a nice jog around the block. However, I make sure that when possible I keep track of my heart rate to make sure it is within my target range. Then it is ab time! I try differing exercises that challenge my core and then add resistance by using a decline, medicine ball, or weights. After abs, I work the target muscle group of the day which could be legs, chest, shoulders, arms, or glutes. When I’m done and sometimes before I even begin, I do a nice stretch and love to incorporate yoga to relax and extend my muscles.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
My biggest accomplishment thus far in my life is maintaining my grades throughout my entire high school career. I have never received below a 97 average in any of my classes which were quite challenging to say the least. I took fourteen advanced or honors courses which were not required over my previous four years and still performed my duties as the Executive President of Student Council, Vice President of Beta Club, President of Junior Leadership, Leader of Prom Committee, member of Frontline, Dance Team, Tennis, teach at my studio, and work a part-time job as a server in a local restaurant. As prospective salutatorian, I am honored to uphold my title, for it took a considerable amount of time and discipline to uphold.

What is the best compliment you have ever recieved?
My best compliment came from one of my good friends who calls me “SUPATINE!” She tells me I’m her super hero who does everything possible and does it all very well.

What is your secret wish?
Even though I plan on attending medical school after receiving my undergraduate, I only wish I could make a living doing my true passion: performing. Whether it be Disney World, a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader, on Broadway, or even in a local theater my secret wish is to entertain a crowd and put smiles on others’ faces by lighting up the stage or camera.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
I’m not a person who is easily embarrassed. I usually laugh at myself without giving another thought as to what others think. But my moment is something unavoidably embarrassing. When I was ten years old my mom signed me up for cheerleading for the city. It was my first year so I was a little nervous. The very first game, I decided to try out my new and improved toe touch that I had been working on. I then found out about ten seconds later from my mother that I had forgotten the most important article of my uniform: my bloomers!

What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
Mmmmm..... hot chocolate brownies smothered with Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream !!!I don’t like pie or cheesecake, and I’m pretty good about withholding myself from cookies and cakes, but it is so hard to resist brownies and ice cream. They are my weakness!

What is your favorite movie and why?
Oh! Selena, hands down! The first time I saw it I was nine years old, as was she in the beginning of the movie. It is the story of a little girl who worked her way to the top with the musical talents of her siblings and the love and support of her parents. Her father believed in her so deeply within his heart and knew she would achieve great success. He sacrificed a great deal of time and money to allow his children to follow their dreams. My mom bought the movie and I spent hours learning every dance and song in the movie, including Spanish songs. I think I have seen it at least thirty-seven times!

What do you like to do for fun... relaxation... recreation?
The most fun times have just been riding in the car with my four best friends, my girls! Just riding with the windows rolled while dancing and singing together is one of my favorite places in the world, and it puts me in the most care free mood. I’m on top of the world. Relaxing? What every girl or woman loves to do... lay next to the pool on a hot summer day and just take it all in. Or perhaps I’ll occasionally pick up a book recommended from my best friend who knows Barnes and Noble as if it were her backyard. Either way, it includes quiet and tranquility.

What would be your dream vacation or destination?
I would enjoy anywhere abundant in nature! Whether it is the deserts and canyons of Arizona, waterfalls of Vancouver, or ice caps of Colorado, as long as there is a breathtaking view and peaceful atmosphere where I can admire God’s remarkable artistry.

What do you like best about the state of Mississippi?
I haven’t done much traveling throughout my lifetime to be able to compare statistics between states. Yet I do know one thing is for sure, and that is people from Mississippi and especially in my hometown of Biloxi are very hospitable. The phrase “Southern Hospitality” is quite appropriate in describing the genuine, good-hearted, and honest people of this state. I encounter hard-working employees each day I am out and about who go above and beyond in their duties to help in any way possible. I love the courtesy of the state of Mississippi.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?
I see myself with a loving husband-who can cook- and a job that I adore. I don’t know exactly which road college will point, but I trust God to lead me down the correct path and help me to find something I enjoy. I see myself as an active member of my church, an exercise instructor at a local gym, and a member of any kind of volunteer organization where I can help people in my spare time. When my life comes to an end, I want to have truly made a difference in someone’s life, especially someone less fortunate than I.

Who am I?
I am a dreamer! I haven’t truly expressed my sincere thoughts for my future but to maybe a handful of family and friends in fear of their apprehension. Typically, the way to go about life is go to college, get a job, get married, and live happily ever after. This is the American lifestyle, which I know I will rejoice in when the time comes. Yet why can’t I chase something a little more challenging. Why can’t I be ambitious and sporadic. I want to travel and see the world, and learn anything and everything I can about it and its variety of cultures. I want to help others and see the graciousness from within their hearts. I want to make a difference.

On the lighter side, my favorite foods include chips and salsa, peanut butter and bananas, and cereal with vanilla soymilk- irresistible! My favorite TV show is Grey’s Anatomy and as far as school goes, I love my Spanish class. I am of Spanish descent and have always felt incomplete because I am not fluent in my native language. I began to teach myself in 8th grade and am currently enrolled in my third year of Spanish three. I actually had to petition and meet with my school principal and counselors in order to gain this as an elective. My school only offered up to Spanish two prior to this current school year. I plan to use my skills as a bilingual medical professional to better serve my patients.

Tell us about your platform.
I chose my platform because it affects something very close and dear to me: my mother. She is not the only member of my family diagnosed with diabetes, but so is my grandparents and seven of my aunts and uncles. I have learned just through observation all the hardships diabetics must manage and it encouraged me to After realizing how commonplace diabetes is in the nation and also how susceptible Americans are to this disease with our lifestyle and eating habits, I decided that this was the perfect platform for me. When trying to specify my platform I tried to think of the roots of where diabetes really begins. Leading causes include high blood pressure and a family history which are- to an extent- unavoidable. Obesity, on the other hand, is a top risk factor which is certainly preventable and is unfortunately dispersing into younger generations. My focus is on changing the lifestyles of our youth in order to better prepare them for a healthy adulthood and hopefully decrease their risk as a diabetic.
